Duluthian Kevin Noreen captured the annual Agate City Classic held at the Lakeview National Golf Course on August 8-9, 2009. Eighty-six golfers entered the event and players were flighted by their 18-hole qualifying round on Saturday.
Wes Salo was the Saturday medalist with an even par 72, and 22 players qualified for Championship Flight. Noreen, Bruce Heglund, and Chris Olson were one stroke back with a 73, and 12 other players were within 6 strokes of the lead going into the Sunday 27-hole medal play format and those scores would be added to their Saturday qualifying round for a 45-hole total score. The remaining 64 players were placed into 8 flights that competed in a match play format on Sunday.
On the first 9-hole round Noreen posted at 1-under par 35, to move into first place going into the final two 9-hole rounds. Other notable scores on the first 9-holes included Tony Battistini posting an even par, 36, and Casey Salakka, Dave Isaacson, Brandon Kolquist, Scott Mathias, and Heglund, shooting a 1-over par 37.
Players struggled more on the second 9-holes, but Heglund was able to card a 1-under 35 to capture the lead by 2 strokes over Noreen, who shot a 3-over par 39, going into the final 9-holes. Heglund increased his lead to 3 by making birdie on the first hole of the final 9-holes, but with a Noreen birdie and a Heglund bogey on the following hole, Heglund’s lead was cut to 1 with 7 holes to play.
Heglund gave up his lead with a bogey on the 4th hole, with Noreen making par, and Noreen was able to take back the lead by parring the 6th hole while Heglund bogeyed. A birdie by Noreen on the par-3 8th hole gave him a 2 shot lead with one hole to play, and with Heglund unable to convert is par putt on the last hole, Heglund ended up in 2nd place, three strokes behind the winner, Noreen, who shot a tournament low 3-under par 33 on his final 9-holes. Ross Fremont of Duluth had a hole in one on the par-3, 2nd hole using an 8-iron from 194 yards. Fremont finished in 5th place. Two Harbors golfer, Curt Cavallin, made an eagle 2 on the par-4 12th hole on Saturday by knocking is 2nd shot in the hole from 100 yards out.
