Princeton, Ind. probably doesn’t come up in a conversation very often in Silver Bay … until recently.
Some local runners are once again expected to take on some top tier high school runners from the “Crossroads of America” in the Bay to Bay Road & Trail Run and Walk Saturday, July 25 in Silver Bay.
Bill Niederhaus, who coaches the runners from Indiana, said he and his runners go someplace every year for an event. They look on the Internet to find what runs fit their fancy.
Usually his team of runners goes to different places each year, but they wanted to come back to Silver Bay once again.
“It was fun to be up there,” said Niederhaus, who coaches a cross country running and track team in Princeton. “Everybody up there is nice.”
The team has already traveled afar, competing in the Howlin’ at the Moon event in Bakersfield, Calif.
Niederhaus wasn’t a 100 percent sure the team would make it to the area for the race, but he said they are pretty sure they are going to come.
Since they have been coming up for the race the past three years, the winner has come from their group.
The race, which begins at 8:45 a.m. in front of the Mary Mac, has about 50 runners pre-registered.
“Only three or four of them are from Silver Bay,” said Tom Clifford, race co-director. “We struggle getting local runners.”
About half the event, which is 10 kilometers, will be on the Superior Hiking Trail between and Beaver and Silver bays.
Pins and T-shirts will be awarded to all the finishers and trophies will be given to the winners of the various age groups.
For more information or to register call Tom Clifford at (218) 226-3813 or visit www.silverbay.com and click on the “Silver-Beaver Bay Days” link.
Cost is $15.
