The accident occurred when a southbound Toyota Tundra driven by William E. Hixson, 69, of Apple Valley, Minn., crossed the center line, sideswiped a Mack truck then hit a Toyota Sienna head on, the State Patrol said.

Hixson was critically injured, the State Patrol said. Four passengers in his vehicle, Annemarie A. Hixson, 74, of Apple Valley, and three children — 16, 13, and 6 years old — from Georgia whose names weren’t released, all suffered nonlife-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Mack, Randall W. Davis, 55, of Sandstone, suffered no apparent injury. The driver of the Sienna, Carmen J. Whitehead, 34, of Silver Bay, suffered a nonlife-threatening injury, the State Patrol said.

The accident happened just before 4:30 p.m. on Monday, south of Beaver Bay.
