The fifth annual Agate Golf Scramble was held at the Lakeview National Golf Course on Friday, July 10. One-hundred and sixty golfers participated in the event and the 2008 team of Gunner Johnson, Larry Smith, Gregg Helgeson, Duane Kempffer, and Mike Graden successfully defended their championship, by winning through a scorecard playoff, to be crowned the 2009 Agate Golf Scramble Champions.
The Johnson team and the team of Darrin Young, Casey Salakka, JJ Hraban, Cathy Erickson, and Jason Kuettel both shot 57 (-15), so a scorecard playoff was used to determine the winner. Team Johnson birdied the 15th hole to give them 1st Place, and the Young Team was second.
Third place went to the team of Aaron Lee, Matt McDannold, Justin Norman, Rey Lasko, and John Kopsell. A total 15 teams won prizes and a random drawing was used to determine which places won gift certificates to the Lakeview National Pro Shop so that all participants had a chance to win prizes.
There were also many contest holes on the course and players won prizes from Co-op Light and Power, Dixie Bar & Grill, Harbor Insurance, Lakeview National, The Landing 61, and the Vanilla Bean. Winners of the three special contest holes were – Scott Ross, winning golf passes to Silver Bay Golf Course; Robert Grann, winning a hotel stay at Superior Shores Resort; and Tom Bott, winning a 09-10 Agate Season Pass. Other event sponsors who supported this event included Lakeview Memorial Hospital and Clinic, Two Harbors Amoco-BP, and the Two Harbors Veterinary Clinic.
The Agate Golf Scramble not only provides a great opportunity for golfers to have a great day on the golf course, but part of the proceeds of the event is given to City Wide Agate Pride. The contest on the Par-3 16th hole raised just over $350 to support athletics at Two Harbors High School, and sponsor donations will also be supporting City Wide Agate Pride as well as the Lakeview National Golf Course.
The Agate Golf Scramble began as an event in the All Class Reunion in 2005, and has continued to be a part of the Heritage Days festivities due to the positive response it has received for the past 5 years.
