Gunflint Lodge waterfront is set to celebrate mid-summer at the Gunflint Trail Canoe Races on July 15.
Paddling competitions, raffles, silent auction, food, and special events will make for a fun-packed event.
Proceeds will go to the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department. The gathering is sponsored by the Gunflint-Seagull-Saganaga property owners’ associations. Residents are encouraged to put together teams of paddlers from their communities.
Schedule of events:
4 p.m.- Two-hundred item raffle of donated goods at $2 and $5 a ticket, a Wenonah Spirit II Royalex canoe raffle with canoe donated by Wenonah Canoes of Winona, Minn., silent auction and special events including minnow races, kayak races, casting contest, putting green and beanbag throw
4:30 p.m.- Food service opens featuring famous Gunflint Trail sloppy joes, vegetarian calico beans, hot dogs, chips, veggie packs, home-baked cookies and bars, ice cream bars, pop, lemonade and coffee.
5:30 p.m.- Eating Contest
6 p.m.- Raffles close
6 p.m.- Canoe races begin with a long distance race, followed by a list of races for age and gender groups which take place the rest of the evening. The highlight of races is the last one, gunnel pumping, in which canoeists stand on the gunnels and pump their canoes to the finish line.
7:30 p.m.- Silent auction closes. The canoe raffle winner will be announced as the end of the evening. For more information contact the organizational committee at (218) 388-2246.
