STELLA MINNIE SORBOShe was born September 14, 1930 in Alden (Freeborn County), Minnesota to Haakon and Alma (Thompson) Hanson. She attended District #16 rural school through the sixth grade, graduated from Freeborn High School in 1948, and attended Mankato State Teachers College for two years.
Stella M. Sorbo, 78, Two Harbors, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at the Solvay Hospice House.
She was born September 14, 1930 in Alden (Freeborn County), Minnesota to Haakon and Alma (Thompson) Hanson. She attended District #16 rural school through the sixth grade, graduated from Freeborn High School in 1948, and attended Mankato State Teachers College for two years. She taught elementary school in Bricelyn, MN for two years and in Omaha, NE for one year. She married Glen G. Sorbo June 13, 1953 and they made their home in Two Harbors. After earning her Bachelor of Science Degree in elementary education from the University of Minnesota, Duluth she worked as a substitute elementary teacher for Lake Superior School District. She also taught creative writing for children through Community Education, was a local news correspondent for the Duluth News Tribune, was a writer and columnist for the Lake County News Chronicle, and was a free-lance writer for a variety of educational, nostalgia, and Christian magazines.
Stella served as a past president of the Minnehaha PTA, and was a historian and publicist for various groups including Women’s Aglow. She enjoyed reading, embroidery, time with her family, and attending Bible Studies. She accepted the Lord as her Savior in 1955. She was a member of Living Waters Fellowship and the Friends of the Two Harbors Library. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Glen, brothers, George, Elmer, Dean and Haakon Jr., and a sister Hulda Hanson.
Stella is survived by her five daughters - Gwen Sorbo of Duluth, Dawn (Kevin) Aune of Two Harbors, Faith (Gene) Ettestad of Maple Grove, Debra (Eugene) von Taube of Wellesley, MA, and Elaine (Kurt) Marple of Buffalo, MN; a brother, Harold (Delores) Hanson of Long Lake, MN,; sisters, Helen Larson of Austin, MN, and Anna (Meritt) Henry of Chaska, MN; sister-in-law, Pauline Hanson; eight grandchildren and a new-great-granddaughter..
Visitation: 3-5 PM Sunday at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors and from 10 AM until the 11 AM service on Monday, July 6, 2009 at the Living Waters Fellowship in Two Harbors. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery.
