The Two Harbors track team’s season came to an end at the state meet last week at Hamline University in the Twin Cities.

Even though no one made it past the preliminaries, the team should not be down on itself. Junior Ryan Guentzel competed in the 400-meter dash while sophomore Alex Horoshak tried the long jump.

The 4-by-200 meter relay team, featuring juniors Chad Brelie and Guentzel and sophomores Caleb Hamp-Sill and Horoshak, also competed. It was the first time a Two Harbors boys relay team made it to the state meet in over 20 years.

Over the years, a state tournament appearance has become commonplace for the Agate track squad.

Why? Head Coach Anthony Altiere attributed a lot of the success to the junior high programs.

“You need to have a strong feeder program to be successful,” he said. “You have to learn to win.”

On Monday, a track clinic for youth in grades four, five and six will begin, through Community Education.

“What I really enjoy is our varsity kids helping the younger kids,” Altiere said.
