There’s nothing like Memorial Day in a small town.
People dressed in red, white and blue; smiles and waves to neighbors; hands on hearts for the Star Spangled Banner; and attention paid to the guest speaker.
In time-honored tradition, Two Harbors will open its Memorial Day service at the Two Harbors High School auditorium with a 30-minute concert at 9:30 a.m. by the city band, led by Janet MacDonald. The music will be the usual mix of patriotic Americana, such as The Minnesota March, American Patrol, Cranberry Corners, USA and Navy Hymn.
At 10 a.m. the program begins with greetings by the mayor and representatives of the VFW and American Legion. Guest speaker for the day will be Capt. Brandi N. Wilson, Co. Comm. 434th Chemical Company. She also is in charge of women veterans through the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.
When the festivities there have ended, a solemn remembrance procession leaves from the high school, then along CSAH 26 to 7th Avenue and on to the veteran’s cemetery entrance at Lakeview Cemetery. Bus transportation is provided.
Wreaths will be placed at the cemetery, followed by a firing detail ceremony with a bugler blowing taps.
Community members are always invited to join the procession, or to wait at the cemetery for the honors performed there.
