Supports opposition to extension project

To the Editor:
I want to commend Council President Mary Rosati for having the courage to stand alone, in opposition to Resolution No. 4-86-09, a resolution applying for federal funding for a proposed highway extension project. This will require 20 percent local match on a projected cost in the neighborhood of 5-7 million.
Lake County Board of Commissioners have a resolution on file opposing this project because there are so many projects between Two Harbors and the Canadian border with much higher priorities.
I am personally opposed to this project for the following reasons:
1. It is not needed.
2. The cost is prohibitive.
3. It would require construction of a bridge over several sets of tracks on the north end of the Two Harbors yard.
4. This would be a tremendous safety hazard for the heavy ore trains coming down a steep grade into the yards because it would obstruct a clear view of what may be ahead of them in the yard.
5. It would dump more traffic into downtown Two Harbors than what could be accommodated.
6. Many other options are available at less cost.
