After starting out the season with a loss to Hayward, the Agates baseball team has been rock-solid.
Coach Rick Coughlin said he is not surprised at the team’s success this season.
“Our expectations are quite high,” he said.
The team started out last week with an 8-3 win over Carlton and then a 11-1 victory over Silver Bay. They continued on this trend the rest of the week.
The Silver Bay game win came with some somberness in the air. In the bottom of the third inning, the Mariners right fielder Mike Cameron collided with Silver Bay’s center fielder.
Cameron eventually left in an ambulance with a broken vertebrae in his neck and a concussion.
Silver Bay’s coach Ward Kaiser said Tuesday that Cameron is back at home recuperating.
“The scenario is working out the best we could hope for,” Kaiser said. “We’re really appreciative of what the people in Two Harbors did.”
The Agates continued on winning that week.
On Thursday, they won 4-1 over McGregor.
Fordes Lodin got the win, striking out five and allowing six hits.
Erik Magnuson, Scott Kovacovich, Matt Bruley and Joel Wuorio each had two hits in the Agates trouncing.
On Friday, the Agates hunted down Denfeld in a 6-4 win.
Wuorio ended up getting the win with five strikeouts. Scott Comrie had two hits and an RBI and Bruley had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.
Tuesday, the Agates defeated Barnum 11-3. Bruley got the win striking out six. Bruley also had two hits including a home run and two RBIs. Matt Jacob went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs and Ben Ruberg and Wuorio each had two RBIs. Ruberg had two stolen bases in the game as well.
