MILWAUKEE — Former reality TV star Sean Duffy has been elected to Congress, giving Republicans a major victory by winning the seat long held by Democratic U.S. Rep. David Obey.
The 39-year-old former Ashland County district attorney had already been campaigning hard when Obey, the powerful chairman of the House appropriations committee, announced his retirement in May.
Duffy defeated state Sen. Julie Lassa in a campaign that drew intense interest from voters and both political parties.
With 75 percent of precincts reporting in Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District, Duffy had 52 percent of the vote compared to 44 percent for Lassa. Independent Gary Kauther had 4 percent.
Duffy campaigned on opposition to federal spending including the stimulus law largely written by Obey.
He is a former star of MTV's "The Real World."
