Lake County schools closed at noon because of heavy snow
Heavy snowfall in Lake County forced the 1,500-student Lake Superior School District to close at noon today.
Heavy snowfall in Lake County forced the 1,500-student Lake Superior School District to close at noon today.
Superintendent Phil Minkkinen had made the decision this morning to open schools on a normal schedule. But he said shortly before 11 a.m. that snowfall had become so intense in Lake County that school officials decided to close to ensure that students made it home safely.
"We're just getting clobbered up here," Minkkinen said. "I looked up, and all of a sudden it got ugly out there. You can't see."
Buses began taking students home, and parents were able to pick up their children as well, Minkkinen said.
In addition to Lake Superior students, the district provides bus service to Northshore Community School, between Duluth and Two Harbors. That school also will be closing because of the snow, Minkkinen said.
