BEST KEPT SECRETS: Rogue Gardener's Perennial Display Stops Traffic

Peggy Moen is used to charter buses pulling into her driveway and motorists coming to a halt outside her Foxboro home.

But with 250 varieties of perennials gracing her property, she’s come to expect a bit of attention.

The madness started in the 80s, when she moved into her new house, where she once again vowed not to become a slave to her garden.

“Of course that lasted only a few days and then I was making flower beds and planting,” Moen explains. “I can’t help myself. I just love making something out of nothing.”

From delphiniums to Queen Anne’s lace, she knows the name of every variety and spends at least two hours a day tending to 16 islands of blooming flowers and several vegetable gardens. Her flowers and her vegetables have won awards at a variety of fairs and competitions.

Her husband, Kenny indulges her whims and is happy to move trees or clear land for yet another plot. And Moen admits there’s probably no end in sight.

“I think my goal is to sell the lawn mower,” she laughs. “I’d love to have the lawn all covered with flowers.”
