Water contact not recommended at 13 area beaches

The Minnesota Department of Health advised the public not to enter the water at 13 area beaches on Lake Superior Tuesday.

According to a release issued by the MDH's Minnesota Lake Superior Beach Monitoring Program, elevated E. coli levels were found yesterday at more than a dozen local beaches, including Agate Bay in Two Harbors and Twin Points Public Access north of Gooseberry Falls State Park.

The other beaches included Lakewalk East / 16th Avenue East Beach, Brighton Beach, Lester River Beach, 42nd Avenue East Beach, Lakewalk Beach, Minnesota Point Harborside Beach, Clyde Avenue Boat Landing Beach, Leif Erikson Park Beach and Sky Harbor Parking Lot Beach, all in Duluth, as well as the Bluebird Landing Beach north of Duluth on Old North Shore Road the Grand Marais Campground Beach.

MDH monitors 38 locations along Lake Superior and St. Louis River Bay during the summer, checking beaches either once or twice a week. They issue regular advisories based on the data. For more information on the advisories and a map, visit www.mnbeaches.org.
