If the recent cold snap has kept you from exercising, the newly formed Two Harbors Walking Club has a solution for you: indoor walking, no treadmill required.

At its kick off Monday evening, the club offered passes that will allow walkers to enjoy stretching their legs in the warmth and comfort of Two Harbors High School before and after the regular school day.

“It’s something anybody can do. People can come with their strollers and people of all ages can do it,” said Leah Bott, Lake County SHIP coordinator. SHIP is a program of the Minnesota Department of Health that works to make healthy living easier across the state.

The new walking club is the brainchild of AGE to Age, Community Partners, Connect for Health, Lake County Public Health, SHIP and Lakeview Hospital. The walking pass isn’t the only perk of joining, however.

Members are asked to log the steps or miles they walk each week, with no minimum requirement. On March 10, all the participants who succeeded in walking regularly will be entered into a drawing for prizes. Logs can be turned in at THHS, Lakeview Hospital or Lake County Human Services.

“As long as you track every week, your name is in the drawing,” Bott said.

Participants can walk anywhere they choose, but the high school is open to walkers on school days 6:30-7:30 a.m. and 4-7 p.m. Volunteers have marked paths throughout the school so walkers can track how far they’re going.

Regular walking results in a number of health benefits like healthier weight, stronger bones, muscles and joints, and better psychological well-being. Bott said she hopes to have a diverse group of folks signing up and walk — regardless of the weather.“It’s all part of getting people moving,” she said.
