Voyageur Artists exhibit opens this weekend
Two Harbors Minnesota 109 Waterfront Dr. 55616

The Voyageur Artists, a group of local art enthusiasts, held its first show on June 30, 1964, at the Paramount Building in Two Harbors. The group, initially just eight people who took an art course together, still exists today.

They will exhibit about 20 pieces at the Waterfront Gallery in Two Harbors beginning Saturday.

"They are kind of an amazing group," said Val Doherty, Waterfront Gallery owner.

The group produced artwork centered on the theme "To Tree or Not to Tree." While Doherty estimates that about 80 percent of the pieces will be paintings, there will likely be some mixed media and pottery as well.

"It's always surprising to see the artists' interpretation of the theme," Doherty said.

Joyce Gow, 88, will have a painting on display at the show. She has been painting for 45 years and has been a member of the Voyageur Art Club for the same length of time.

"I saw the things submitted to the show and there are a lot of really interesting pieces," Gow said.

Art has sent Gow all over the world. She's travelled and taught throughout the country and even in Italy and China.

"I made lots of wonderful friends and learned so much," she said.

Doherty said that many of the artists in the Voyageur Art Club have fascinating stories like Gow's.

Community members will have a chance to meet the artists and hear their stories--while enjoying hors d'oeuvres and wine--on Saturday at Waterfront Gallery. The exhibit opening is from 3-5 p.m. at the gallery, 623 First Avenue, Two Harbors.
