Student struck by car outside WKHS
A student was struck and slightly injured by a car outside the high school in Silver Bay on Monday afternoon, the Silver Bay Police Department reported Tuesday.
Police were dispatched to a vehicle accident involving a student at 3:30 p.m. The student was sent to a Duluth hospital but is “doing well,” Lake Superior school district Superintendent Bill Crandall said Tuesday. At the school board meeting on Thursday, William Kelley High School principal Joe Nicklay said the student had returned to classes.
The police department declined to release any more details about the accident or the driver of the vehicle.
Crandall said the student was trying to cross Outer Drive in a crosswalk between William Kelley High School and Rukavina Arena. Crandall said the crosswalk, along with one on Lake County Road 2 next to Two Harbors High School, is scheduled to receive flashing signs warning drivers of people walking on the roadways. He expects the signs to go up in 2015.
Crandall called accidents like the one Monday a “rarity.”
