The Mariners ended a losing season with two wins last week, defeating Wrenshall and Lakeview Christian Academy in their last regular games of the season.

The girls couldn’t repeat their win over Wrenshall for their first playoff game, though. They hosted the Wrens on Tuesday and the Wrenshall squad stayed ahead most of the game to win 44-35.

Senior Brandi Nopola lead the scoring in her last high school basketball game ever, notching 14 points for the team. Junior Tara Dow had 8 points and sophomore Erika Ernest had 6 points. Junior Kayla Maleski, junior Aubrey Thun and freshman Kayla Klofstad also put points on the board for the Mariners.

Nopola is the only senior this year and the team will have a strong lineup of returning seniors next year on their roster.

They finished the season with a 2-21 record.

The Agates headed to Moose Lake and put up a good fight against the Rebels (18-7) but couldn’t pull off a win in their first playoff game.

They finished the first half with a close 17-18 score, but Moose Lake / Willow River dominated the second half to take the game 49-40, knocking the Agates out of the playoffs. The score was expected – last time the Agates played MLWR, they lost by 10 points, too.

Senior powerhouse Lane Schraufnagel scored 17 points in the loss. Freshman Ayla Lemke had 9 points and junior Briana Stuberud had 6 points. Senior Allison Nowacki had 5 points and senior Krista Keranen and junior Casey Cross both put points on the board.

The team will lose four seniors this year, including Keranen, Schraufnagel, Nowacki and Laura Fabini. They finished the season with a 12-13 record.

Schraufnagel is ranked in the region in many individual statistics. She’s 12th in field goal percentage with a .497 success rate and 11th in rebounds with 9 per game. Nowacki was 14th in rebounds with 8.3 per game. Stuberud was ranked 6th in the region in assists with 4.2 per game and 10th in steals with 3.2 per game. Lemke was 11th in steals with 3.2 per game.
