The girls played Esko on Thursday at home and head to Ely tonight before a weeklong break for the holidays.
TH girls’ basketball
The lady Agates basketball team is building up a strong record, winning two and losing one during the past week. That brings their record to 4-1.
They defeated Cook County in a close match last Friday, winning by only three points in overtime. Senior Lane Schraufnagel led scoring for the team with 13 points and senior Krista Kerananen wasn’t far behind with 11 points, including one three-pointer. Juniors Briana Stuberud and Casey Cross and freshman Ayla Lemke also put points on the board for the win.Over the weekend, they lost 28-59 at Denfeld but defeated Carlton at home on Tuesday 64-30. They don’t play again until a tournament they’re hosting on Friday, Dec. 27.
TH boys’ basketballThe Agate boys’ basketball squad brought its record up to 4-2 after winning the last two games. They defeated Cook County 49-39 in Grand Marais last Friday and played Silver Bay again Tuesday, defeating 27-65.The majority of the team saw playing time, spreading out the scoring among nine players. Senior Kyle Omtvedt and junior Alex Lemke led with 12 points each. For the Mariners, junior Mitchell Blomberg and sophomore Michael Fisher led the scoring with six points each.The Agates play tonight at Marshall.
SB boys’ basketballIn addition to losing to the Agates, the Mariner basketball squad was defeated by the McGregor Mercuries at home last Friday, with a final score of 32-67.The Mariners play Saturday at Ely and then have a break until the new year.
Ski teamThe Nordic ski team finally got to take advantage of the recent snowfall, competing in its first meet of the season on Saturday. It was held at Snowflake Ski Center in Duluth and hosted by the team from Ely.The boys’ team ended up in sixth place out of eight teams, while the girls ranked fifth out of six.In boys’ varsity, junior Everett Hommes led with a 19th place finish out of 46 skiers, with a time of 17:55 for the 5-kilomter race. Senior Owen Cruikshank placed 28th, freshman Mikael Overby was 32nd and freshman Ethan Compton placed 41st.On the girls’ side, sophomore Marina Schreiner had an impressive race, earning a ribbon with her 5th place finish in 19:59. In the field of 31 skiers, junior Scotti Berg earned 22nd place, sophomore Kari Haaversen was in 24th, freshman Ruby Walsberg was in 27th and sophomore Mara Christensen finished 28th.Three girls also raced in the junior varsity field, placing 24th-26th. Junior Krysi Linville came in first for the team, followed by freshman Natalie Hudson and freshman Renee Swardstrom.The team raced on Thursday at Mt. Itasca in Grand Rapids and are headed to in Invitational at Deer River on Dec. 28.
