Two Harbors boys basketball

The Two Harbors boys basketball season came to an end after a 75-47 loss last Wednesday at International Falls in the first round of the Section 7AA tournament.

The Broncos took control of the game early carrying a 23-point lead into halftime. The Agates had a better second half, only being outscored by five.

Jon McDannold led Two Harbors with 21 points (four 3-pointers). Alex Horoshak scored 10 points and Caleb Hamp-Sill had eight for the Agates.

McDannold, Horoshak, and Hamp-Sill will all graduate this season, along with Jake Iskat, Josh Ensign, John Forsberg, and Josh Deming.

"They will be missed," said head coach Jamie Otterbad.

The team ended the season 3-24. He said the team was inconsistent at times and the team will work in the gym in the summer on fundamentals.

Junior Jesse Omtvedt will play in the Polar league All-Star game at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at Barnum.

Otterblad was assisted by Roger McDannold and Dan Lodin.

Silver Bay boys basketball

The Silver Bay boys basketball season ended in dramatic fashion losing 69-68 to AlBrook/Cotton in overtime in the first round of the Section 7A tournament at Esko Thursday.

AlBrook held a two-point lead going out of the first half while the Mariners outscored AlBrook by two in the second half. A one-point difference in overtime ended the Mariners season.

Kyle Blood and Henry Mitchell (three 3-pointers) both scored 21 points for the Mariners. Ryan Blood added 15 points for Silver Bay with two 3-pointers. He will be graduating this season, with many other key players returning next year.

Head coach Rick Frericks was assisted by Dan Johnson.

Junior Olympics

Nordic skier Leif Gilsvik continued competition at the Junior Olympic skiing event last week at Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis.

He finished 52nd in the 15-kilometer race last Wednesday. On Friday, he placed 51st in the 10-kilometer freestyle event and his relay team finished 19th Saturday. He finished 45th in the qualifier freestyle event last Monday out of 55 racers.

Gilsvik is on the Gogebic Community College Nordic ski team in Ironwood.

College football

Spring workouts are just around the corner for college football and some local talent who graduated from Two Harbors High School will be trying to make a mark.

Matt Wicklund was a redshirt freshman and defensive lineman at the University of Minnesota Duluth, which won the Division II National Championship. He had three tackles on the season.

Current sophomore Matt Jacob plays at St. Scholastica on special teams and as a backup linebacker. He recorded one tackle last season.

Current freshman Scott Comrie started out last season as a linebacker and then switched to defensive end at St. Scholastica. He also played some special teams. He also had one tackle.

Spring football begins in April.
