Two Harbors softball 1-1

After a slew of cancelled and rescheduled games, the Agate softball squad finally got out on the field this week for some games. They won their first game of the season against Silver Bay and lost later that day to Carlton.

Last year, the team ended the season 7-5. Five strong returning players will anchor the team this year, including sophomore Sara Fjeran, junior Jasmine Hiukka, freshman Ayla Lemke and seniors Lindsey Anderson and Courtney Brandt.

Captails are catcher Hiukka, left-fielder Anderson and second baseman Brandt. Fjeran will start as pitcher. She batted a .485 last year and led the Polar League in at-bats and stolen bases. Lemke will play short stop – she led the conference last year with 18 RBIs and 33 at-bats.

Coach Chris Lemke said he expects the girls to be competitive, even with a season starting three weeks later than scheduled. The girls practiced indoors and in parking lots when snow was still on the field.

The girls played their first two games at Chisago Lakes, defeating the Mariners 12-7 and losing to Carlton 4-18. They play at McGregor this afternoon.
