On June 7, a home-built airplane crashed into Lake Superior. After almost two weeks of effort, divers and other rescue personnel raised the hardly-recognizable debris from the watery depths on Monday.

The wreckage was located about a mile from Brighton Beach in about 137 feet of water. The pieces were hauled to the surface, suspended in the water by two large orange float bags and towed into McQuade Harbor. Crews recovered the body of one crash victim on June 9.

In this photo, divers Tom LeSage (center) and Chris Kirchoff pull smaller pieces of wreckage to shore at McQuade Harbor, while a crane lifts what remains of the small plane’s fuselage.
