Over $200,000 spent locally in Chamber contest

Christmas came a couple of days early for six local kids, delivered by the Two Harbors Chamber of Commerce, this year’s shop-local Santa.

Three boys and three girls won covetable prizes on Monday at the conclusion of the Chamber’s first annual Shop Local contest. Kids signed up to be in the running and anyone who shopped locally could earn points for them. The kids earned a point per every dollar spent when local shoppers dropped off their receipts at True Value Hardware Store in Two Harbors throughout December.

The contest tallied $233,734 in local spending throughout the month, and chamber employee Janelle Jones was happy with the success.

“Our hope was that people would change their way of thinking about shopping, and I think we accomplished that,” she said.

She heard stories about people waiting to get gas until they were in Two Harbors or skipping Duluth chain stores in favor of locally owned shops in town. She said the competition was stiff, too, as people formed teams to support kids in the contest.

Biker Williams and Carly Goerdt each won a TV for getting first place with 28,726 and 13,465 points respectively. Laila Naegeli and Alden Beck won second place, scoring an XBOX 360 bundle and Scotti Berg and Kade Norman took third, each winning a Polaroid tablet bundle. In total, 49 kids participated.

Jones said they’re already planning a contest for next year, with some changes prompted by their experience this year.

The contest was sponsored by The Lake Bank, Sonju Superstore, Lake Connections, Bodies in Balance, True Value, Hoeft Design, Two Harbors Federal Credit Union, Pure Driven, ShopKo, ReMax Prodigy, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Events Marketing Specialist, Two Harbors Area Chamber of Commerce, Wells Fargo and Jones Cleaning.
