Iron ore shipments on the Great Lakes totaled 6 million net tons in July, a 72 percent increase over July 2009's 3.47 million tons. However, shipments were about 6 percent below the month's five-year average of 6.31 million tons.

Total ore shipments in July were 5.97 million tons, compared to 3.47 million tons in July 2009 and the month's five-year average of 6.31 million tons.

Two Harbors shipped 1.46 million tons in July, compared to 188,672 tons in July 2009 and a five-year average for the month of 1.21 million tons. For the year, Two Harbors had shipped 7.49 million tons through July, compared to 2.39 million tons at the same time last year and a five-year average of 5.91 million tons.

Silver Bay shipped 686,556 tons in July, compared to 229,742 tons in July 2009 and a five-year average for the month of 559,508. For the year, Silver Bay had shipped 3.73 million tons through July, compared to 543,663 tons at the same time last year and a five-year average of 2.47 million tons.

For the year, 27.6 million tons of iron ore were shipped on the Great Lakes through the end of July, an increase of 115 from the 12.84 million tons shipped by the same time last year and just 1.4 percent below the five-year average of 28.01 million tons.

Duluth shipped 542,270 tons of iron ore in July, compared to 926,839 tons in July 2009 and a five-year average for the month of 896,002 tons. For the year, Duluth shipped 2.83 million tons through July, compared to 2.58 million tons at the same time last year and a five-year average of 3.46 million tons.

Superior shipped 1.35 million tons in July, compared to 411,207 in July 2009 and a five-year average for the month of 1.16 million tons. For the year, Superior shipped 3.60 million tons through July, compared to 1.58 million tons at the same time last year and a five-year average of 4.96 million tons.
