Two Harbors city crews have opened the Paul Gauche Memorial Bandshell in Thomas Owen’s Park, setting the stage (pun intended) for a new season of arts entertainment. So, on June 19, grab a blanket and an umbrella (just in case) and catch the first of 10 concert performances of the Two Harbors City Band.

Now in its 117th season and made up of musicians ranging in age from teens to senior citizens, the band is the oldest continuously performing city band in the state, according to Jim Glaser, a 45-year veteran of the group. The audiences also run the gamut from young to not-so-young, with many of the same folks making their way to the park on concert nights.

“It’s entertaining and it’s a tradition,” Glaser said, “the kids play on the cannon…and you can look out and see the same people from week to week, and people who know everybody in the band.”

Conducting the band will be Dave Haaversen, who said he deliberately avoids selecting music around a formal theme, opting instead to develop a varied playlist.

“I’d rather do all good music and not worry about a theme,” he said, so audiences can expect a little of everything. “Variety, that’s my theme.”

Two Harbors City Band concerts are Thursday evenings from June 19- Aug. 14, starting at 7:30 p.m. For the first concert, Haaversen’s selections will include:

The Thunderer - March J.P. Sousa

Slavonic Dances A. Dvorak/Johnson

Rise and Shine - March D.I. Moore

Do-Re-Mi Rogers & Hammerstein/Ployhar

Whistler and his Dog A. Pryor

Camptown Races arr. W.J. Dawson

Amparito Roca - Spanish March J. Texidor/Winter

Highlights - “Fiddler on the Roof” Harnick & Bock/Moss

Them Basses - March G.H. Huffine

Glaser said the band is always looking for new members, so get your sax, clarinet, drum or tuba out of mothballs and share your talent with the community!
