Silver Bay Public Library News

The Friends of the Silver Bay Public Library need your help. The group is looking for volunteers to serve on its board and assist with annual fundraisers. These fundraisers support children and adult programs, provide additional books to the library and lend support wherever it is needed. Meetings are held at the library at 6:30 p.m., on the fourth Monday of each month. The organization may not exist in its present form if new members are not found. If you cannot become a committed member, there are still many opportunities for community members to lend a helping hand. For more information, contact the library at 218-226-4331. Thank you.

LEGO Drive to benefit THPL’s future LEGO club

Are unused LEGOs overtaking your house? Missing pieces making that old kit useless? Well, the library is hosting a LEGO drive between now and May 31, as the library prepares to host a monthly LEGO club program for kids. Donated blocks can be brought to the desk at the library anytime during open hours.

This is a great way to clean out those toy boxes and help the library at the same time. If you don’t have any used LEGOs, consider buying a set or a building plate to donate to the library. LEGOs are the ultimate creative toy. They stimulate brain development and dexterity through imaginative play. By having a LEGO club at the library, we can foster kids’ imaginations in a fun social environment and promote library use at the same time! LEGO activities will include building contests and challenges to put kids’ ingenuity to the test.

One Book selection for 2014

This year’s “One Book, One Community” pick is The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway. It is a beautiful novel about war, the endurance of the human spirit, and the subtle ways individuals reclaim their humanity. It was inspired by a real incident during the siege of Sarajevo. There are a variety of programs planned for the region. Brochures will be available at local public libraries, as well as the events section of the Duluth Public Library web page. This book will be discussed at the Two Harbors Public Library on Thursday, March 20, at 1 p.m.
