Skiing the North Shore: A Guide to Cross Country Trails in Minnesota’s Spectacular Lake Superior Region by Andrew Slade puts you out into your own back yard. What could be more fun than getting the dog involved? In Skijor With Your Dog, author Mari Høe-Raitto offers training advice for you and your dog. The library also has books on telemark , skate skiing, downhill skiing and snowboarding.

If this isn’t your style, don’t give up. Try snowmobiling, hockey, ice fishing or ice climbing. Get cold, then warm up in the sauna that author Rob Roy helped you construct with The Sauna. There are also books on the health benefits and history of sauna.

If you’re the more adventurous sort, then let Winter Backpacking: Your Guide to Safe and Warm Winter Camping and Day Trips by Ben Shillington be your companion. Or try an overnighter or two with The Winter Camping Handbook : Wilderness Travel & Adventure in the Cold-Weather Months by Stephen Gorman.

These titles are just the tip of the iceberg. The point is, don’t be bored. Enjoy winter. All this ice and snow will be slush in no time.

Winter Reading

Programs

Now that the holidays are out of the way, it is time to kick-off our winter reading programs. Once again we have programs for every age. For children, age birth through 5th grade we have “Snow Better Time to Read,” a program dedicated to counting how many minutes children read. Parents reading to kids counts, too! The big prizes this year are a Duplo pirate ship, Despicable Me Operation game, K’NEX building set, and Snap Circuits. For teens, grades 6 – 12, we have “Zombie Read,” with a series of zombie-related prizes and a grand prize of a $25 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble.

Last but not least, we have a reading program for adults — “Hot Reads for Cold Nights.” The grand prize is a Vanilla Bean gift card, but we have a few smaller prizes to give away, too. So stop by the library starting on Tuesday, Jan. 21, and get in on the fun!
