National curling competition in TH this week
Forget the Olympics! This week, turn off the TV and head to the Two Harbors Curling Club to catch some high-level sports action.
“In one way or another, all of our members will be helping either before or during the event. We couldn’t do it without the volunteers,” said THCC president Rhonda Studier-Sve.
Over 160 Two Harborites have tallied hundreds of hours at the club getting everything ready for the big week. They’ve prepared the rinks, set up lodging, organized the arrival of about 100 competitors, hired officials from the U.S. Curling Association and planned a formal opening ceremony.
“It’s all volunteers that are putting this together … volunteers that all have full-time jobs,” Studier-Sve said.
They’ll see the fruits of their labor beginning with the opening ceremonies on Saturday and in games throughout the week. Teams started arriving today for the competition, travelling from North Dakota, Wisconsin, Washington, Maryland, Arizona, Ohio and California.
All the teams will play each other in the round-robin tournament, which means there will be plenty of matches to watch beginning Saturday afternoon. The games will be played every day at 8 a.m., noon, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. through Thursday.
“We’ll have some chairs set up so just come and watch,” Studier-Sve said. “Any of the games are going to be just fun to see.”
The curling club, located in the same building as the Lakeview National Golf Club on Highway 61, is open to the public. Those who are eager to learn more about the sport or just want to see some great curlers in action, have a great opportunity to do so this week.
“There will typically be a member there that you can ask questions,” Studier-Sve said.
They will also have the TVs in the club tuned to the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia so visitors and contestants can catch up on the international action during breaks. There will be food and drinks available at the club bar and grill in the afternoons and evenings.
Norma O’Leary of Silver Bay will be playing in the tournament with her team. Catch her in action Saturday at 7 p.m., Sunday at 12 p.m., Monday at 12 p.m. and 8 p.m., Tuesday at 4 p.m., Wednesday at 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Thursday at 12 p.m. and 8 p.m.
“It will just be a good mix of curling,” Studier-Sve said.
