Minnesota extends comment period on gypsy moth quarantine

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture is extending its comment period on the proposed quarantine of gypsy moth for Lake and Cook counties.

The original 30-day comment period will be extended to 45 days, ending March 12.

The state is proposing quarantine for Lake and Cook counties to help slow the human-assisted spread of gypsy moths that have exploded in number along the North Shore and in some inland forest areas. In 2013, the MDA captured a record 71,258 gypsy moths; 90 percent were located in Lake and Cook counties.

But the quarantine could have an adverse impact on some loggers and the movement of wood for the wood products industry in the region.
