Conservation Officer Dave Schottenbauer recently began his duties patrolling the woods and waters of the Silver Bay area. The Silver Bay station has been vacant since the departure of Officer Johnson in May of 2013.

Schottenbauer, a 10-year veteran of the Department of Natural Resources Enforcement Division, brings extensive experience along with a love for the area to his new post. After attending schooling in Ely and Minneapolis, Schottenbauer served as a Hennepin County Deputy Sheriff from 2001 to 2005 before making the move to the DNR. Now, he’s working in the place his family often vacationed.

“This station has come open several times during my career,” he said. “This year, the timing was right for my family so I grabbed it.”

Schottenbauer has spent the last seven years at the Princeton station and has played an instrumental role at the conservation officer training academy at Camp Ripley.

He said he looks forward to becoming part of the community and is anxious to serve the area.

“My goal here is to ensure we sustain the resources we have so they will be available for future generations,” he said. “Getting to know the lay of the land is my biggest challenge right now.”

According to Schottenbauer, one of the main reasons he was interested in the Silver Bay station is his love for the area and he had already made it a point of getting some on-the-job hours clocked in the area.

“I always made sure I could get up here and work with Wahlstrom from Tofte a couple of times a year,” he said.

Schottenbauer said the North Shore has also been a family recreation destination for him for years.
