Library tutorial will help folks ace the ACT or get a new job
Two Harbors Minnesota 109 Waterfront Dr. 55616

Applying for a job? Preparing for the ACT? Just want to learn how to use Photoshop? The library has a resource that covers all of these bases and more.

The Learning Express Library database is available free of charge to anyone with an Arrowhead Library Card and the library is offering a class on April 16 to help patrons learn how it works.

"It's essentially a collection of career tools," said Becky Norlien, library assistant for adult services.

She said the library has had the service for a number of years, but they just recently upgraded to the version with software tutorials. She said the library wants more people to be aware of the service because it's such a useful tool.

"The event is an opportunity for people to get an introduction to it and some ideas of how to use it," Norlien said.

The tool is perfect for improving skills and exploring careers, Norlien added. Users can take practice tests required by various professions and get a taste for what those jobs entail.

Users can also take ACT, SAT or GED practice tests or access tutorials for a number of computer programs, like Photoshop, PowerPoint or Excel. It also has resume building tools and lessons to improve interview skills. Those looking to expand their knowledge in any subject area--even if it's not for a specific test or career--can take skill-building courses. The topics are diverse and include public speaking, personal finance and trigonometry, among others.

Derek Raisanen has volunteered to facilitate the hands-on tutorial on April 16. If you can't make it to the event, call the library at 834-3148 to set up a tutorial at a different time. Raisanen is developing a handout that will be available in time for the class and at the library after the event.
