Lows in the 20s and 30s below zero, and daytime highs struggling to climb out of the teens below zero, are forecast for the Northland on Monday.

“The safety of Minnesota’s schoolchildren must be our first priority,” Dayton said in a news release. “I have made this decision to protect all our children from the dangerously cold temperatures now forecasted for next Monday. I encourage Minnesotans of all ages to exercise caution in these extreme weather conditions.”

Then-Gov. Arne Carlson ordered schools closed statewide three times in the 1990s because of cold weather.
