F(r)iends throw a Halloween party
Two Harbors Minnesota 109 Waterfront Dr. 55616

All dressed up in your Batman or Darth Vader costume with nowhere to go? Friends of the Two Harbors Public Library have a party for you. The event is called "Fiends of the Library" and it's a thank you to the community for all of its support during the library's recent renovations. It will be held at the THPL, Saturday, Oct. 26, 6-8 p.m. and everyone is invited to attend.

"We wanted to combine the celebration with the Halloween theme and came up with 'Fiends of the Library,'" said Friends of the Library's Jan O'Donnell. "It'll be a family friendly event, costumes are encouraged and people who come in costume will be entered in a raffle to win a book purchased through the library."

The evening of ghoulish fun will include a pumpkin carving contest, but with a twist. Participants are asked to carve their pumpkins, squashes or gourds at home and bring them to the library for judging. Prizes will be given for best efforts in a number of categories and the jack-o-lanterns will be placed outside the library for visitors and passersby to enjoy. There'll be face painting and trick-or treating for little monsters and a very special activity has been planned for all in attendance.

"There's going to be storytelling by the fireplace upstairs," said O'Donnell, "Rachel Nelson is going to be there, and we're encouraging the community to tell stories or bring a Halloween story to read."

Fiends of the Library is one of many events organized by Friends of the Two Harbors Public Library. The group recently held its annual used book sale and last winter hosted its Love Your Library event that included a silent auction to kick off the fund raising for renovation projects now underway. In addition to monies raised, Love Your Library earned the group second place honors at the Minnesota Association of Library Friends convention. Despite the accolades, the group doesn't intend to rest on its laurels. Fund raising will now focus on improvements to windows in the library's original Carnegie section.

"These are the original windows of the Carnegie portion of the library. Although there was an effort to make the windows tighter decades ago, they were poorly installed and not in keeping with the standards of historic buildings," said O'Donnell ," our efforts are to assure that the windows are energy efficient and affirm the value we place on the history of the building."

But first, it's time for a little fiendish fun!

Fiends of the Library will be held Oct. 26, 6-8 p.m. at the THPL. The event has been made possible by a grant from the Lake County Recreation Board.
