Finland News: July 5
There was a coffee and cake reception held for Jack and Genea Pichotta at The Finland Historical Site on Wednesday evening. Jack and Genea will be moving to Cloquet and will surely be missed here. They have been very instrumental in volunteering in this community. We wish them the best in their new move.
Former resident Judy Linman of Donnelly, Idaho spent a few days in the area and also attended the Pichotta party at the Historical Site.
Another former resident, Bernice Dittman, now living in Marengo, Ill., along with her nephew, Dennis Goers and family, visited with friends at Zion recently. She is still living at the Florence Nursing Home in Marengo.
A benefit will be held for Mark and Monica Riebe on Thursday, July 11, at the Clair Nelson Center. Monica has undergone heart surgery and proceeds will go to help defray medical costs. There will be a silent auction, live music by the Curry Family Band and a barbecue with brats and burgers. It will be held from 4-8 p.m. Mark is very active with Finland Fire and Lake County Rescue and Monica is always eager to help if anyone needs anything.
Finland Fire and Rescue is again busy getting ready for their all- wooden bat tournament, July 20- 21, at the Gregg Field. Plan to come out and support the fire department, get some great food and meet up with old friends.
Deepest sympathy goes out to the friends and family of Pauline Haveri. Pauline died at the age of 94. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 6 at the Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors at 1 p.m. Pauline was a lifelong resident of the North Shore.
Lake Superior Community Theatre will team up with Finlanders and others to present a new play about the Finland Co-op. The play, written by Suze From of Finland, is part of the ongoing celebration of the Finland Co-op's 100th anniversary. The Finland Co-op play, yet to be named, will be directed by community theatre's Paul Deaner and stage managed by the Betsey Mead.
"We've already started contacting and signing up folks to act in the play and work a crew," said Deaner. "Our local artists and carpenters will help us create the set." Marc Smith and Betsey Mead were signing people up at the June 22 co-op picnic celebration at the Finland community center. Performances are scheduled for October 24- 26 on the stage at the Clair Nelson Center.
If you are interested in being part of the production as a performer or crew person, please call Paul Deaner 353-7509 or Betsey Mead 226-8180.
