Two Harbors area

Conservation Officer Sean Williams (Ely) worked a special Mille Lacs Lake detail in Isle over the weekend. Angling activity was good with a few people catching at least a few walleyes, and smallmouth bass anglers reporting very good luck. Violations included, expired boat registration, and walleye gross over limit.

Conservation Officer Marty Stage (Ely) worked watercraft and angling activity mostly inside the BWCA throughout the week. A BWCA detail was worked with Conservation Officer Fondie, covering multiple enforcement stations within the wilderness.

Conservation Officer Anthony Bermel (Babbitt) worked anglers and boaters inside and outside the BWCA. An incidental otter was picked up. Enforcement action was taken for fishing without a license, no type IV personal floatation device, personal watercraft violations, and no fishing license in possession.

Conservation Officer Darin Fagerman (Grand Marais) reported that he did a remote patrol of the BWCA, checked area walleye lakes and remote designated trout lakes. He assisted campers with an aggressive bear that wouldn't allow the campers to pack up and leave. Every time they got out of their vehicle to pack up, the bear charged in and got up on its hind legs to chase the campers back to their vehicle. The officer and a deputy responded to help the men pack up and go to another campground.

Conservation Officer Thomas Wahlstrom (Tofte) worked ATVs, boating and angling enforcement. The Officer checked wetland complaint areas in the Silver Bay area with the Silver Bay Police Department. Inland anglers were checked on area lakes. Several individuals were caught trying their luck without a fishing license. Nuisance bear, wolf and beaver calls were handled along the North Shore.

Conservation Officer Mary Manning (Hovland) worked boating and angling activities as well as some ATVs. Warm weather mixed with frequent rains has the forest alive with bugs and mosquitos. Manning spent time investigating a wolf depredation complaint in which a young heifer was taken down by a pack.

Conservation Officer Don Murray (Two Harbors) worked boating and fishing activity over the busy weekend. Some area lakes had some good crappie fishing with the warmer weather. Enforcement action was taken for watercraft registration and angling license violations.

Water Resource Enforcement Officer Mike Scott (NE MN) assisted Minnesota Sea Grant folks in staffing an aquatic invasive species education booth at Two Harbors Heritage Days. Information about AIS was exchanged with local folks and those visiting the North Shore.

Lake Superior

Marine Unit

Sergeant Keith Olson (Lake Superior Marine Unit) checked anglers at access points along Lake Superior. Aquatic invasive species was also worked in conjunction with the checks. Olson also worked Marine Unit items for the upcoming summer events planned for the Duluth-Superior harbor.

Conservation Officer Matt Miller (Lake Superior Marine Unit) checked anglers and boaters on Lake Superior. A busy holiday weekend found many boaters out enjoying the water. A concert detail at Bayfront Park was worked with many watercraft in attendance for the Bob Dylan show. Assistance was given to local agencies with emergency calls. Enforcement action was taken for ATV and watercraft violations.
