Lake Superior School District Superintendent Phil Minkkinen said there will likely be two elementary school teachers cut from Minnehaha Elementary in Two Harbors due to a drop in enrollment.

The idea of cutting teachers at the school first came up in March when the school board passed a resolution directing administrators at all schools to make recommendations for reductions in programs and positions. Minkkinen said the main concern is at Minnehaha, where there will likely be no need for three teachers for fourth grade next year.

Since the beginning of the school year, the district has lost 12 students in Silver Bay and 11 in Two Harbors. The district originally projected enrollment was up.

Negotiations

The school district has received word that principals in Lake Superior School District want to negotiate a new contract. Other union groups have also come forward in recent weeks wanting to negotiate. The district has discussed meeting with employees about the possibility of a raise in the coming weeks. There have been talks in Legislature about a salary freeze for all public employees. The district is on a two-year salary freeze which began in 2009.

Grant

The Cooperative Light and Power of Lake County Community Trust Board of Directors gave a $1,000 grant to the district to help with the Missoula Children's Theater.

Last June, the troupe worked with more than 50 local students to present "Robinson Crusoe." The theater offers weeklong opportunities to learn about acting, culminating in two performances funded through ticket sales, fees, donations, and grants.
