The northeastern Minnesota deer harvest appears to be up from last year, according to registrations in a few permit areas, although season-end figures will be more accurate than early-season figures, wildlife managers cautioned.

Here are registration figures for the DNR's Cloquet work area for the first three days of deer season (Nov. 6-8), provided by area wildlife manager Rich Staffon:

Permit area 180 -- Last year, 978; this year, 1,147.

Permit area 181 -- Last year, 1,411; this year, 2,082

Permit area 182 -- Last year, 466; this year, 455

Permit area 183 -- Last year, 1,153; this year, 1,265

"If anything, this year's numbers could be an underestimate," Staffon said. "It seems like everyone is doing pretty well."

Tom Rusch, DNR area wildlife manager at Tower, also expects the harvest to be up a bit.

"I have a gut feel we'll be up a tick over last year," he said. "Somewhere between 5 and 10 percent."
