Circle of Hope: Comfort and support for breast cancer patients
Circle of Hope, a Duluth-based, all-volunteer non-profit organization has been providing financial help to breast cancer patients in the region since 2010. Over the past three years it has paid out thousands of dollars’ toward medical bills and living expenses, relieving patients of added stress caused by accumulating debt. COH is able to do so by applying for grants and raising funds through efforts like its upcoming gently-used clothing (and more) sale. Here’s how it works:
For the next several weeks COH will be collecting gently used items. Donations of clothing, accessories, cookbooks, children’s books, games and baked goods will be accepted. Then, on March 29, the sale will be held at First United Methodist Church (the Coppertop) with proceeds going to support breast cancer patients.“We serve northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin,” said Peg Anderson, who calls herself COH’s coordinator, secretary, grant writer, beggar and website designer.Anderson, also a breast cancer survivor, is the remaining founding COH member still active in the organization – one woman moved from the area and the other passed away. The trio met as participants in a breast cancer support group where they noticed an unsettling pattern among their cohort.“We saw that breast cancer patients were struggling financially. They would be going through treatment and the bills just kept coming in. (We) saw how some patients were called weekly, even as they were dying of breast cancer,” Anderson recalled. “The bills just came in, the calls and bill collectors just kept calling. As these patients would struggle to have a positive attitude, it was affecting their spirit. We decided something needed to get done.” To date COH has disbursed over $85,000.“Overall, we have helped at least 70 patients, if not more, in various capacities,” Anderson said. “We truly believe: The breast cancer patient above all else.”To support COH and its efforts to help breast cancer patients, call 218-464-1626 or contact Peg Anderson at firstname.lastname@example.org to donate gently used items for the sale.
