Bruce A. Highland, Sr.
Bruce A. Highland, Sr. of Clover Valley passed away at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Silver Bay on Saturday, May 17, 2014.
Bruce was born Feb. 23, 1925 in Brimson, Minn. in a log cabin with his grandmother as the midwife.
He joined the Navy in 1943 and volunteered for the submarine service. He made four war patrols in the South Pacific aboard the submarine USS Hawkbill.
Following his release from the Navy he spent two years managing Rollins Store (now Hugos Bar) in Brimson. In 1948 he went to work for the DM&IR Railroad working as a brakeman until his retirement in 1984.
Bruce enjoyed his retirement years with gardening, woodworking, driving the Alaska Highway, operating his sawmill and spending time at the shack in Brimson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jim and Gene.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara; children, Roberta (Robert Archibald) Highland, Homer, Alaska; Bruce Jr. (Barb) and Sandra Voltz both of Two Harbors; grandchildren Kristina (Todd) Loining and Brad Voltz; four great grandchildren and his little dog Daisy.
At his request there will be no service.
The family wishes to extend its warmest thanks to the amazing staff at the MN Veterans Home for the kind and thoughtful care given to Bruce.
