County seeks landfill options

Within the next few weeks, Lake County officials will hear back from the consultants they hired to examine their waste management facilities.

The evaluation will focus on three facilities, including the hazardous waste building and recycling center just off of Seventh Avenue in Two Harbors and the demolition landfill near Castle Danger, off of Highway 61 about 12 miles north of Two Harbors.

County administrator Matt Huddleston said that the landfill is about five years from being filled to capacity and the other two facilities have nearly been outgrown as well.

“We know we’re going to need to do something in the future,” Huddleston said.

The consultants are expected to lay out some options and cost estimates for the county’s consideration.

Strange Nature casting

In early July, auditions will be held in Duluth for a movie to be shot in the area.

Duluth native Jim Ojala is directing an eco-thriller that revolves around the mid-1990s finding of deformed frogs in Minnesota ponds. A few big names have already signed on to the film project, including professional wrestler Johnny Nitro (John Randall Hennigan), Carlos Alazraqui from “Reno 911!” and David Mattey, who has appeared on “How I Met Your Mother and “Two and a Half Men.”
