The North Woods Grizzlies ran over the Mariners at Silver Bay by a score of 48-21.The Grizzlies gained 519 yards on the ground.Travis Hooper ran for 203 of them, scored two touchdowns and returned a punt 85 yards for another score.The Mariners were done in by mistakes on both sides of the ball. Broken tackles and miscommunication on offense made a win impossible.They could not stop the Grizzlies on the initial tackle and fumbled the ball away three times as did the Grizzlies.The score stood at 20-14 in favor of the Grizzlies in the second quarter,until the Grizzlies scored three unanswered TDs.

Chad Smuk, Michael Fischer and Nathan Bauck scored the three Mariner TDs. Fischer scored on a run of 55 yards, Smuk hauled in a nine- yard scoring pass and Bauck scored on a pass play of four yards. Luke Small completed eight of 13 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Jonah Koehler gained 116 yards on the ground for the Mariners, with Fischer adding 84 more.

The Mariners took the opening kickoff and promptly went three and out. A 41- yard by Klofstad put the Grizzlies at their own 21. Thirteen plays later, Eddie Watt carried it in from seven yards out for a 6-0 lead. Following another Mariner punt, Hooper raced in from 65 yards for a 12-0 lead. The Mariners replied with a pass from Small to Smuk to cut it to 12-7. During an exchange of punts, Hooper ran one back to make it 20-7. Twenty- three seconds later, Fischer scored his TD and it was 20-14 and as close as the Mariners would get. North Woods scored on a 57- yard run by Hooper and a halfback option pass from Elijah Halverson to Watt for a 34-14 halftime lead. A 48- yard touchdown by Justin Nelson was the only score of the third quarter. A Small to Bauck TD pass preceded the game's final score, a 74- yard run by Andrew Jordan.

Tonight the Mariners are at Mountain Iron to take on the Mountain Iron-Buhl Rangers who are 1-1 this season. They opened up with a 34-14 loss to Ely and then defeated Northeast Range 48-8 in which Archie Winans threw for 300 yards and 5 TDs.

Deven VanHouse finished the 2013 racing season with a 2nd place finish at Proctor, 4th at Superior and 2nd at Hibbing in the points standings of the Midwest Modifieds Division.

Dan Thewis a 2006 graduate of Two Harbors has been added to the coaching staff of the North Shore Storm hockey team.

Cory Stafne, a 1984 graduate of Kelley high school is the new head coach for the Duluth Northern Stars high school girls hockey team.
