Girls' hockey

The girls lost for the third time in three games with another tough loss to the Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears by a score of 2-1.The Mariners once again played very well defensively, but had trouble generating offense. They led 1-0 just three minutes into the game after Rebecca Dilley scored a goal on a set up by Sarah Fjeran. Eveleth tied it up on a second period goal from Ashleigh Seabrook and got the game winner from Carly Hiti with 6:01 left to play.

Cassie Swanson had 18 stops in the Mariner nets and Kora Bonicatto stopped 26 Mariner shots.

The Mariner lack of offense and goal scoring is due to a number of factors. First is the fact that as a young team their opponents will usually be bigger, stronger and faster. Second is a lack of quality shots. They pass up shots or they don't take shots. Third, they don't shoot enough. They also should be going to the net whether or not they are the shooter. Two of the winning goals against them this season came from following up the play.

Boys' football

Three Mariners, juniors Luke Small and Chad Smuk and senior Leif Maxwell, were named to the Big North All Conference football team. Small played quarterback and linebacker. He completed 39 of 92 passes for 585 yards and five touchdowns, ran for 251 yards and four touchdowns and led the team in tackles with 64.

Smuk played tight end, running back and defensive line. He led the team with 11 receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown, ran for 238 yards and three touchdowns, had 16 tackles, a blocked punt and two sacks.

Maxwell anchored both the offensive lines and defensive lines. He was second in tackles with 57, led with three recovered fumbles and had a sack.

Receiving honorable mention were senior Preston Westerlund and junior Jonah Koehler. Westerlund played center and defensive line, had 56 tackles and led the team with four sacks. Koehler led the team with 661 yards rushing, touchdowns with eight and points with 56 at running back, receiver and place kicker.
