The Wren defense was the story of the game as they not only shut out the Mariners, but held them to 105 yards of offense, with 45 on the ground and 60 in the air. The Mariners helped by turning the ball over five times with three interceptions and two fumbles.

A two yard by Vine put the Wrens up for good with 2:20 left in the first quarter. Shelton went in from five yards out to make it 12-0 at halftime as the Wrens limited the Mariners to four first downs in the opening half. With 3:42 left in the third quarter, quarterback Marcus Virginia found Jared Klittel for a five- yard TD pass and it was 18-0. A run of 19 yards by Shelton upped it to 25-0 in final quarter of play.

Then the Mariners got their best break of the game when Michael Klofstad recovered a Wren fumble and returned it 63 yards to the Wren 13 yard line. On a 4th and 1 play from the Wren four, Virginia intercepted a pass and returned it 99 yards to end the game's scoring.

The Mariners rushed for 45 yards on 38 carries  and Luke Small completed 5 of 18 passes for 60 yards while under a great deal of pressure. Eben Fischer led the defense with seven tackles followed by Cody Peterson, Klofstad, Brandon Johnson and Small with 6 each. Nathan Bauck added five more and Jonah Koehler and Michael Fischer each had three. The Wren defense dominated the line of scrimmage not allowing the Mariners any chance of establishing a ground game.

The Mariners finished the season with a record of 3-6. With the end of the season it's also time to say goodbye to the seniors: Joe Miller, Jacob Dehart, Luke Small, Jonah Koehler, Ethan Nelson, Brett Harkness, Chad Smuk, Michael Klofstad, Bradley Dugas and Eben Fischer.

The Mariners girls high school hockey team, a cooperative with Two Harbors and Cook County, began practice on Monday with their new coach Bruce Carman. Elizabeth "Biz' Huss has been hired as the new assistant coach. She is a 2009 graduate of Kelly High School and just finished playing hockey for four years at Bethel College.
