The baseball team’s game with Cook County was its first of the year. The Mariners and Vikings were in a close contest until the Vikings erupted for four in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth innings to take a 10-3 lead. The Mariners responded with three in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough and they fell 10-6. Joe Borud got the win for the Vikings and Zach Duresky took the loss for the Mariners. Duresky gave up six hits and struck out six. Duresky and Jonah Koehler each had two hits, Duresky scored twice and Nate Bauck drove in two runs. Frankie Miller went two for two and scored twice for the Vikings.
After McGregor scored three times in the top of the first, the Mariners answered with four in their half of the first and never trailed again. The Mariners added four more in the second and three in both the fourth and sixth innings. Nick Perfetto, in his first varsity at bat, drew a walk with the bases loaded to drive in the game-ending run. Luke Small put out his bat at the last second to drop down a bunt and score Bauck on a suicide squeeze, on a play where it appeared Bauck had home stolen.
Leading the offense was Koehler who went four for five and Troy LeBlanc who was three for three. Bauck had three hits and Luke Small, Spencer Tiboni and Marc Small each had two. Lead-off hitter Bauck scored four times and Koehler crossed the plate three times. Luke Small, Marc Small and Tiboni each drove in two runs. Luke Small went the distance on the mound to pick up the victory. He gave up five hits and struck out 12 batters. Zach Hawkinson had two hits for McGregor and Cole Hoover took the loss giving up 12 runs on 13 hits in four innings of work.
Emma Bemlott gave up one run on three hits while striking out three batters to pick up the win over Cook County. The Vikings scored the run in the top of the sixth, but two Mariner runs in the bottom of the inning ended the game. Erika Ernest had three hits and Brooke McMillen, Bemlott and Cora Carter each added two more. Kayla Klofstad, Bemlott, Sydney Topp and Everly Bauck each scored twice and Ernest drove in three runs. Madison Roy had a triple for the Vikings.
McGregor jumped out to a 6-0 lead after one and half innings of play. The Mariners responded with seven in their half of the second inning and eight more in the third to take the lead for good. Three more runs in the sixth ended the game via the 10 run rule.
Phoenix Lillis picked up the win while giving up four earned runs on five hits. She struck out 12 and walked five. McMillen, Ernest, Carter and Bauck each finished the game with three hits. Klofstad and Bemlott each had two. Ernest and McMillen each drove in four runs, with Klofstad, Carter and Bauck driving in two each. Bauck scored three times and McMillen and Klofstad each crossed the plate twice. McMillen, Klofstad and Bauck each had a triple in the game.
Hockey coaches resign, replacements sought
Lake County is currently looking for two new high school hockey coaches. Bruce Carman of the Silver Bay Mariners and Shawn Bartlette of the North Shore Storm have each resigned from their head coaching positions.
