Softball rankings unfair

The QRF computer rankings calculated by Minnesota-Scores.net are said to be the basis once again for seeding teams for the section 7A softball playoffs this season. I hope the powers that be wake up and realize that this is not a normal season. Very few teams are going to finish their schedule of 20 games. It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that a mathematical formula without an equal number of games among teams will not be valid. Nobody is going to end up playing anything near an equally competitive schedule. I think they need to go back to a vote by the coaches. Some teams have gone south and to domes to play games, while the vast majority are still looking to play their first games of the season.

The Mariners, for example, are looking at playing 10 games at most. Their game with McGregor, which was scheduled for April 30, was called off due to heavy rain. It would have been their first of the season. They had a home game scheduled with Moose Lake yesterday, but scores were not available by press time if they played at all.

The Polar League Conference is pretty much gone for this season as no one will be able to complete their conference schedule. Some schedule changes for the Mariners have them playing Duluth Marshall at home on May 15, Mesabi East at home on May 16 and at Ely on May 17. They are trying to reschedule the game at McGregor and an at-home game with Barnum. This would give them 10 games if they can play all of them. They are scheduled to play at Cook County on Monday, at Carlton on Tuesday and hosting Cromwell on Thursday.

Baseball Briefs

The baseball team has already missed nine games. They were scheduled to host Moose Lake yesterday, travel to Cook County on Monday, go to Carlton on Tuesday and host Wrenshall on Thursday.

LeBlanc will play at World Hockey Championship

Drew LeBlanc has been picked by USA Hockey to play for Team USA in the World Hockey Championships being held this month in Sweden. The team is made up mainly of college players and NHL and minor league players whose teams missed the playoffs.

News of the Wild

While everyone pretty much assumed the Minnesota Wild would make the playoffs after their signing of free agents Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, no one expected it to come down to the last day of the regular season to clinch the No.8 seed in the western conference. That earned them a seven game opening series with the best team in the NHL this season, the Chicago Black Hawks.

I think the Wild will be doing very well if they win one game in this series. Last season the No. 8 seed in the west, the Los Angeles Kings, won the Cup, but then they peaked come playoff time. The Wild peaked in February. While Chicago is very good, I'm picking the Pittsburgh Penguins to win it all.

How about those Twins?

How many people thought the Minnesota Twins would be at the .500 mark on April 30?

Mariner Hockey
