The three northland representatives at the boys state hockey tournament all won two out of three games and came home with a trophy. Hermantown fell 5-4 to St.Thomas Academy in the Section A championship game, Duluth Marshall defeated Rochester Lourdes 6-5 for consolation honors in A, and Duluth East beat Wayzata 7-3 for third place in AA. Once again, the tournament was highly successful with a total attendance of 117,748. This translates to over $2 million in ticket revenue alone. As usual, the AA event featured a defensive game and the A event had a more offensive game.

Congratulations to Kyle Blood who was named to the Polar League All-Conference basketball team. He was also selected to play in the Polar League All Star game to be held April 2 at Barnum. He surpassed the 1,000 mark in career scoring this season. Alicia Nopola also went over the 1,000 point mark this season for the Mariners. She should be a lock to get All Conference honors and play in the All Star game, too.

Minnesota State High School League section redistricting

The MSHSL came out with their plans for the redistricting the sections, which they do every two years. As a result, the Mariners will see a few changes in their various sections starting with the 2013-14 school year. They remain in Section 5 for football with the same nine teams. In volleyball, Section 7A adds Barnum and McGregor and loses Duluth Marshall. Section 7A in girls' hockey will go from eight teams to six teams with the loss of Chisago Lakes and Princeton. The North Shore Storm will add Hermantown in their section. In boys basketball Mesabi East will be replaced by McGregor. The loss of Mesabi East is the only change for girls' basketball. In softball,7A will see the loss of Duluth Marshall and McGregor and the addition of Greenway. Baseball will lose Duluth Marshall and see McGregor combine with Cromwell.

District 11 advanced 8 teams to various state tournaments being held this weekend. Cloquet and Proctor/Hermantown are at the girls 12U B tourney and Duluth is at both the 12U A and 14U A tournaments.
