The spring sports season finally got underway for the softball teams in Lake County, but they had to travel to Chisago Lakes to play. The Mariners picked up the Agates and they traveled to Lindstrom. Then, when they got off the bus they played against one another.

The Agates jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Mariners came back to tie the score at six. It was not enough, however, as the Agates outscored the Mariners 6-1 the rest of the game for a 12-7 victory. Sarah Fjeran picked up the win for the Agates, giving three earned runs and 12 hits while striking out nine Mariners. Emma Bemlott took the loss for the Mariners. The team had four errors that led to a lot of runs. Brianna McGrath, Jasmine Hiukka, Ayla Lemke and Courtney Brandt each had two hits for the Agates with McGrath, Hiukka and Lemke each driving in two runs. Brooke McMillen hit the ball hard and clean for the Mariners and went 4 for 5 with a double. Erika Ernest was 2 for 5 and Cora Carter added a double.

Phoenix Lillis took the loss for the Mariners in an 11-3 game versus the Carlton Bulldogs. She had eight strikeouts. Grace Macor had the win for Carlton in giving up three runs on four hits. She struck out 10 Mariners. Six Mariner errors led to a four-run and five-run inning for the Bulldogs. Hannah Benson, Jessica Stanslaski and Tori Anderson each went 4 for 4 for the Bulldogs.

In order to avert having to decide conference champions by a vote of the coaches like last year, the Polar League ADs decided to go to the two-division setup this season for baseball and softball. Last season, due to a late start like this year, not everyone got in their full slate of conference games. There will now be the Blue Division, for higher enrollment teams and the White Division or lower enrollment teams. The Blue has Esko, Two Harbors, Moose Lake, Barnum, Cook County and South Ridge. The White consists of Silver Bay, Carlton, Wrenshall, Floodwood, McGregor and Cromwell. When it is fully implemented, each team will play every other team in its division twice and have three crossover games versus teams from the other division. This will also apply to volleyball and basketball.

The Mariners are scheduled to be in Duluth today to play Duluth Marshall in both softball and baseball. We’ll see if the weather holds. The Mariners are also scheduled to play in a softball tournament in Pine City tomorrow.

Next season, the boys 7A and 7AA hockey semifinals will be played at Amsoil Arena on the same day.
